Since the takeover of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by Amazon in May 2021 the project of the next Tomb Raider movie seems to be at a standstill. Here’s what we know.
Alicia Vikander, who plays Lara Croft in the 2018 Tomb Raider movie, is now something of a new face on the silver screen for the famous archaeologist. And the actress has made some revelations about the sequel, which at the moment gives no sign of life officially.
Reminder of the facts
For the record on April 12, 2019, it is revealed that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is launching the development of a sequel for the film Tomb Raider and the studio has then just hired the screenwriter Amy Jump. GK Films and Warner Bros. Pictures will also return to the production which is officially launched in September of the same year. Except that… in 2021 Amazon buys MGM.
A Tomb Raider movie in limbo
Entertainment Weekly had the opportunity to interview Alicia Vikander to get some news on the project, unfortunately nothing very positive on the program. The actress says she has no idea of how things are going to work out.
I think Misha and I were ready, so it’s kind of in someone else’s hands, to be honest
Vikander also admitted that she can’t really say everything Green has in store for the next big screen film, she says she is however “excited to show the world” all that. Anyway, as always with a big buyout like this, projects fall into limbo for a while before reappearing or disappearing forever.
Given that this is a successful license, it seems unlikely that Amazon would abandon a goose that lays golden eggs.
